Our town provides a recycling bin, but not a good explanation for how to use it. All these years we had just had our recyclables mixed together in it. But I’ve seen on some shows that people separate out their recyclables. Is this necessary to do within the bin?
Then I’ve heard that you need to call your recycler to find out what kind of plastics they recycle. So I did and found out that they only recycle plastics #1 and #2. I hadn’t realized that I had been tossing plastic #5 into the bin as well. So what happens to those extra plastics? Do local recycling plants send the plastics they can’t process to a recycling plant that can? Or do they just toss it into a landfill anyway?
On “Living With Ed” they pointed out that if you keep the cap on a water bottle that you are recycling, they will toss the whole thing! Is this true?
I just feel there are a lot of hidden rules to recycling which will make it an exercise in futility for those who are earnest about it. Any tips?
How can they tell the difference between the plastics? Do they look underneath each item to find the number?

They have these really inconvenient and far away recycling centers in our town, but it is not practical. I think if we had something at our complex, people would be more apt to recycle. If I got it going at our complex, maybe others would follow…
